Talk about inconsistent! After having a good nights sleep the previous night I woke at 3 and stayed awake. Needless to say I was knackered for most of the day…and I feel the onset of a cold (research suggests that lack of sleep weakens immunity). In the past I’ve used the Insight Timer app which has loads of quality and varied sleep meditations to help ease into sleep – I think I’ll get amongst that again. NO coffee for this kid today! …

All to often I fall short with my sleep, waking up tired and flat. I’m not alone – many kiwi’s (*1) feel they don’t get enough sleep most nights. However last night I’m stoked to say was not one of those nights! According to the SLEEP CYCLE app (iOS) I was in bed for close to 8 hours and spending most of in deep restorative sleep! (see above image) Sleep is a foundational part of our wellbeing in respect to mind, body …
I’m rubbish when i don’t get enough sleep. I usually overreact and underperform. My monkey brain swings into action, flinging verbal shxt everywhere, which usually ends with me apologising (*1) and feeling annoyed at myself. I’m not alone, everyone shares this trait – maybe to different degrees, however the outcome is always the same – we’re less than optimal. In the past, at work, I’ve treated my sleep deprivation as a badge of honour. Working long hours, supposedly getting shxt …
Check it! I modified a stretch which Vicki at Motus gave me …I call it DA FLEXANATOR. This contraptions purpose is to open up my hips – or specifically my Hip Flexors. I’ve spent the last 20 years sitting at a workstation thumping at a keyboard – there’s some claims that long periods of sitting can shorten the hip flexors – I have no idea if that’s true (*1) . I do know however that my hips are locked up and …
I miss surfing. It was my alone time. When you’re riding a wave you’re in that moment, your mind is focussed – no distractions. It’s not often that we find ourselves in this state of bliss during our busy day to day lives. Usually our minds are caught between A and B while anticipating C, whether we’re revisiting the past, anticipating the future, judging things, other people or ourselves. Surfing allowed me to be present in mind and body, from …
DAY 1 – RPM Introducing Penelope Sole (Group Exercise Manager/Personal Trainer) at the Lincoln University Recreation Centre (LURC). Don’t be fooled by her smile – SHE IS A BEAST! Penelope took us for RPM – an indoor cycling workout where you ride to the rhythm of Music! 45 minutes of sprints, mountain climbs and interval training. I definitely feel like I got a workout – indicated by the pool of sweat surrounding my bike and my wobbly legs. Thanks LURC …
Welcome to my personal journey of better health and wellbeing. Disclaimer: straight off the bat – I am not qualified to give anyone advice. I am no guru or health professional expert. What I am is, a chubby middle-aged maori fulla – who is taking stock halfway through his life and realising that there’s plenty of room for improvement (especially in terms of health and wellbeing). Midlife crisis? Maybe… I’ve felt a little complacent since turning 40 (I’m 45) in …
